HHS History Teachers wear their Red Poppy's Today to recognize International Remembrance Day. The Red Poppy is a symbol of the American Legion, and it has been used to commemorate Veterans Day as well. Some

History of the Red Poppy
The red poppy is an internationally recognized symbol of remembrance and hope for peace, primarily commemorating military personnel who died in war. Its association stems from the fields of vibrant red poppies that flourished across the battle-scarred landscapes of Flanders, Belgium, during World War I.
The symbolism of the red poppy was inspired by the 1915 poem In Flanders Fields, written by Canadian military doctor Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. The poem describes how the poppies grew in the churned-up soil among the makeshift graves of fallen soldiers, their vivid red color thought by some to represent the blood spilled in the conflict. American professor Moina Michael was inspired by the poem and vowed to wear a red poppy as a sign of remembrance. She campaigned to have the flower adopted as an official symbol of remembrance, leading to the American Legion and the newly founded (Royal) British Legion adopting it in the early 1920s.Today, artificial red poppies are distributed by veterans' associations, such as the Royal British Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, in exchange for donations. The funds raised provide financial and practical support to veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families.

Mrs. Campbell’s Government class had a special guest! Senator Philman Ladner visited to share his insights about his role in the legislative branch and discuss how laws are made in our state. Students enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and learn firsthand about the importance of civic engagement.

Thank you, Senator Ladner, for taking the time to speak with our students! 🇺🇸📚
