🦅 Hawk Pride Spotlight: Denny Peterson🦅
A proud Hancock High School graduate from the Class of 1996, this former Hawk attended HHS from 1992–1996 and competed in basketball, baseball, and golf.
One of the greatest influences during those years was Mr. Peterson's father, Coach Dennis Peterson, who coached basketball at Hancock. Spending everyday life together in the gym and on campus created memories that meant more than any stat or trophy ever could. While it’s hard to single out just one teacher, every educator along the way left a lasting impact on Mr. Peterson.
When asked about favorite memories, it’s the friendships that stand out most — bonds that have lasted a lifetime. One unforgettable moment came during a game at PRC, when his dad jokingly said he wouldn’t attend unless a no-hitter was thrown… and he went out and did exactly that.
Being a student-athlete at Hancock taught lifelong lessons in discipline, commitment, teamwork, responsibility, and time management — lessons that continue to shape life beyond high school.
Today, being in the same hallways where he once walked as a student feels natural. Hancock has always been home to Mr. Peterson. In fact, the only time he wasn’t on campus in the last 47 years was between 1996 and 2006 while attending college and working in another district. Coming back felt like he never really left.
Now, his favorite thing to watch isn’t a game on TV — it’s his kids doing what they love: a junior son playing soccer and baseball, a middle son in the band, and a daughter at East playing basketball. Nothing beats that.
Hancock in the 90s was different — smaller, closer, and filled with school spirit. With Junior High in C Building and High School in A Building, it was a place where everyone knew everyone, and you always felt like you belonged. Voted Most School Spirited senior year, Hancock pride has always been part of who he is.
💬 Advice to today’s Hancock student-athletes:
Slow down. It’s only a moment in time, and it will pass quicker than you think.
